Nutting's Flycatcher Myiarchus nuttingi

This typical Myiarchus flycatcher—a genus that fails to ignite most observers’ excitement—is found from northwest Mexico south across the Pacific slope of Middle America to northwest Costa Rica. Throughout its range, the species favors tropical deciduous forests and thorn woodland, as well as more open areas, provided there is some reasonably dense scrub, and it ranges from sea level to at least 1800 m elevation. The Nutting’s Flycatcher is generally considered to be resident, but wandering individuals have reached as far afield as the southern United States. Formerly regarded as being conspecific with the Ash-throated Flycatcher (Myiarchus cinerascens), three subspecies of Nutting’s Flycatcher are generally recognized, and it seems that two vocal types are involved, which issue requires further research to accurately define the group’s taxonomy.
